Earning a Living Doing What I Love

No boardroom. No big launch. Just a desk in my bedroom, a laptop, and a little girl asking for one more hug before bedtime. That’s where it all started.

I never planned on being a Virtual Assistant. Like many of us, I wanted work that would let me be present for my daughters, not just provide for them. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with the work itself: building a clean website, editing a video until the story clicks, or turning a client’s messy inbox and social feed into something calm and organized.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you can actually earn a living doing what you love, here is what I’ve learned so far:

1. Passion often shows up after you start
We’re told to “follow your passion” as if it’s a finished thing waiting for us. For me, it was more like a spark that grew with practice. Web design, graphic design, video editing, and social media management were skills I picked up and sharpened. The more I did them, the more I cared. Don’t wait to feel passionate before you begin. Start, and let the passion catch up.

2. Let your “why” carry you through the hard days
Being a single mom and running my own work-from-home career isn’t always easy. Some days, the laundry, the deadlines, and the tiredness all arrive at once. What keeps me going is simple: my daughters. My little one’s laughter and hugs remind me why I show up, and my eldest, who helps care for her little sister, reminds me I’m not doing this alone. Find your reason, name it, and keep it close.

3. Build a life around the work, not the other way around
The best part of my setup is flexibility. I can work hard for my clients and still be there for the moments that matter, like co-sleeping with my toddler, a quiet cuddle, or a spontaneous DIY haircut when a salon trip isn’t happening. Doing what you love shouldn’t cost you the people you love. If your work fits around your life, you’ll do it better and for longer.

4. Get paid for being reliable, not just talented
Talent gets you noticed. Reliability keeps clients. Attention to detail, honest communication, and on-time delivery are what turn a one-time project into a long-term working relationship. Clients don’t just pay for skills. They pay for peace of mind. That trust takes time to build, but it becomes your most valuable asset.

5. Keep your habits simple and your mindset strong
I’ve written before about simple healthy habits, patience, and not overthinking. That’s not a coincidence. A sustainable career runs on small daily choices: taking care of your health, forgiving yourself for past mistakes, and turning procrastination into a tool instead of a trap. Success is mostly built on the mundane things done consistently.

6. Let authenticity be your edge
I’ve been hurt before by trusting the wrong people. But that hasn’t changed who I am. I’m still sweet, generous, and thoughtful, and I’ve learned that being authentic isn’t a weakness in business. It’s a strength. When you show up as yourself, you attract clients who value the real you.

You don’t need a perfect plan or the perfect moment. Start with one skill, one client, and one small step toward work that lights you up. Protect your time, be honest about your limits, and keep learning.

Earning a living doing what you love isn’t about escaping hard work. It’s about choosing work that’s worth the effort. Every day, I get to build, design, edit, and support amazing clients from home, close to the two people who inspire me most. That’s more than a living. That’s a life I’m proud of.
