3 Lessons Pickleball Taught Me About Business and Life

Have you ever tried something new just for fun, only to have it completely take over your life? That’s exactly what happened to me with pickleball.

Beyond the website wireframes and color palettes, I’ve completely fallen in love with a sport that has transformed my weeknights and weekends. What began months ago as a fun way to stay active has quickly turned into a genuine passion. There’s something exhilarating about the fast-paced rallies, the satisfying pop of the ball hitting the paddle, and the wonderful community that comes with the sport.

On June 12, I stepped outside my comfort zone and competed in my first pickleball tournament in Women’s Doubles as a complete newbie. Stepping onto the court for my first competitive match was a completely different experience. The adrenaline rush, heightened focus, and shared energy with my doubles partner made it a memorable milestone. Whether we were executing a strategy at the kitchen line or recovering from a difficult point, every moment contributed to my personal growth.

Playing regularly through open play and continuous drill sessions with my coach has reminded me of a few core lessons, ones that apply just as much to running a creative business as they do on the court.

1. Show Up and Embrace Being a Beginner
Starting anything new as an adult can feel daunting. But true growth lives right on the edge of your comfort zone. Taking the court on June 12 as a complete newbie proved to me that you don’t need to be perfect to participate; you need the courage to show up and give it your all. The same is true in business. Some of my biggest breakthroughs have come from doing the thing before I felt “ready” for it.

2. Communication and Chemistry Are Everything
In Women’s Doubles, trust and synergy with your partner are crucial. You have to communicate constantly, reset after mistakes, and lift each other. It’s a powerful reminder that whether you’re on the court, collaborating creatively, or managing client relationships, clear communication builds winning partnerships. A missed shot or a missed email both come down to the same thing: staying in sync with the person beside you.

3. The Power of Intentional Rest
As a creative professional, I find that finding true balance is essential, and it’s a lesson pickleball keeps teaching me. After a tough match, you don’t chase the next point right away; you reset, breathe, and come back sharper. Getting active on the court has become my favorite way to recharge my mind, step away from screens, and bring fresh energy and focus back to my work. Rest isn’t a break from the game; it’s part of how you play it well.

My first tournament was definitely not my last! I’m still buzzing from the experience, honing my shots, and looking forward to many more games ahead. Have you tried pickleball yet, or taken on a new challenge outside your comfort zone recently? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
